Hard work and perseverance has paid off for David Akers. David was cut three times before defining his career with the Philadelphia Eagles. Being served walking papers in Atlanta, Carolina and Washington, intertwined with jobs as a substitute teacher and waiter, provided David with an early dose of reality. Those early hardships formed the foundation of this truly humble man. Given what could have been his last chance at an NFL career, David joined the Philadelphia Eagles in 1999 and was asked to play in Berlin for an NFL Europe team. By that season’s end he was in a hospital bed for one week with food poisoning and after losing 30 pounds, almost didn’t make it back in time for Eagles training camp. St. Luke’s Half Marathon celebrates its 33rd year in 2017, securing its place as one of the region’s oldest and most beloved long-distance road races. The 13.1-mile race continues to be the largest running race in the Lehigh Valley. Up to 3,400 runners are expected to toe the line next April. All proceeds from the race benefit grants, scholarships and programs put forth by the Lehigh Valley Road Runners. The LVRR has provided over $400,000 to youth fitness and running programs over the past 10 years. Runners are encouraged to register early. The field limit is set at 4,000 runners for the half and 650 for the 5k. All runners must register online. The entry fee for the half marathon is $60 between Oct. 1 and Oct. 31, $65 between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31, $70 from Jan. 1 through March 15, $100 between March 20-April 9. The fourth tier…

There were about 500 kids who participated in the St. Luke’s Youth Run held on Saturday, April 23, 2016. Thanks to support from the Lehigh Valley Road Runners the race is free to all children ages 3 to 14 years old. Participants received a shirt, medal and snack. The race committee would like to thank all the wonderful volunteers from the LVRR and Parkland Cross Country teams. The LVRR awards prizes to the top 3 schools that have the most participants on race day. The winning schools were: First – $750 Bethlehem Christian School Second – $500 Donegan Elementary School Third – $250 Freemansburg Elementary School Comments from Donegan Elementary School participants: “I liked the pink shirt.” “I liked the Superheroes.” “I would like to thank the Road Runners for supporting us.”

The St. Luke’s Half Marathon will be run for the 32nd time on April 24, 2016. That’s a pretty good record for a half marathon. Why has it been so longlasting?
